Community consultation in international projects
September 19, 2022
The impacts of climate change and environmental destruction can be seen all over the world, but they are most certainly not evenly distributed. The poorest and most vulnerable communities are often the ones who suffer the most from the negative effects of climate change, environmental degradation, and natural disasters. In recent years, multinational companies have become increasingly aware of their responsibility to these communities, with many now taking a proactive approach to engagement, particularly in Africa and Latin America.
This is perhaps first due to the growing importance of corporate social responsibility and human rights standards, as well as increased enforcement activity and media attention. However, it also reflects the realization that consultation with local communities before undertaking projects that may have an impact on them is sensible from both a human and commercial perspective. In this briefing paper, we examine the role of community consultation in international projects, including the legal framework, certain case studies and best practices.
