Unlocking value through sustainable procurement systems

July 7, 2023

As organizations increasingly recognize the urgency of addressing sustainability challenges, the implementation of ISO standards has become crucial. The ISO 20400 standard for sustainable procurement has gained significant prominence, providing organizations with a framework to mitigate environmental impact, foster economic growth and embrace social responsibility.

ISO 20400 serves as an international standard for responsible purchasing practices that apply to all facets of an organization. This standard classifies the scope and principles of responsible purchasing, advocating for the participation of organizations in adopting sustainable procurement practices.

It comprises systems and strategies, enablers of sustainable procurement and sustainability in the purchasing process. Each section contributes to creating a comprehensive framework for sustainable procurement implementation, including the significance of regulatory requirements to facilitate sustainable procurement. Enabling procurement governance, empowering people through training and support, identifying and engaging stakeholders, and prioritizing sustainable procurement throughout the supply chain are pivotal aspects. These enablers foster a sustainable mindset and provide organizations with the necessary tools to implement responsible procurement practices effectively.

Implementing ISO 20400 requires a holistic approach, encompassing five essential steps. Firstly, organizations must set sustainable goals that align with their values and vision. Secondly, they should determine procurement goals and priorities, placing a specific emphasis on sustainability. Thirdly, it is crucial to establish governance and compliance mechanisms that seamlessly integrate sustainability into procurement policies. Fourthly, organizations need to apply sustainable practices at every stage of the procurement process, including planning, supplier selection, and contract management. Lastly, measuring outcomes and progress allows organizations to drive continuous improvement and refine their sustainable procurement practices to achieve even greater impact.

More broadly, organizations need to consider the following questions in designing a sustainable procurement system:

  • What governance mechanisms will support sustainable decision-making and foster responsible purchasing practices?

  • How can an organization minimize negative environmental impacts and promote ecological balance across the supply chain?

  • How to address human rights concerns and manage supplier relationships ethically, all while streamlining costs and enhancing purchasing performance?

  • How can purchasing departments strengthen process and communication channels with stakeholders while mitigating risks within the supply chain and fostering resilient relationships?

Supply chain management systems empower organizations to embrace sustainable procurement, contributing positively to society, the economy, and the environment. By adhering to international standards and implementing industry best practice, organizations can foster responsible purchasing decisions, reduce their ecological footprint, and promote social well-being.
