Participative cantines to counter food waste and build collaboration

April 15, 2023

A participative cantine is a meal service model that encourages involvement, cooperation and communication among participants as they work together to make healthy, delicious meals.

A number of different participative cantines models can be put in place. In the context of schools, participative cantine models can increase student engagement in healthy eating and to promote positive relationships between students, parents and teachers. In the context of companies, participative cantine models can improve communication and collaboration between employees, fostering an environment of teamwork and mutual respect. Participative cantines can also be incorporated in non-profit models, where the emphasis is on providing nutritious, affordable meals to those in need.

In all cases, the purpose of a participative cantine is to create an environment in which healthy eating habits are fostered and celebrated. Participative cantines also have the potential to reduce food waste, since participants are usually mindful of what they are taking and eating, thus avoiding over-consumption or throwing away leftovers. Participative canteens also provide an opportunity for practicing socio-emotional competencies such as taking turns, learning how to collaborate, set and reach goals, and take responsibility for one’s actions. One of our favorite places to experience the participative cantine is at Le Petit Ney in Paris.

In summary, participative canteens are an important part of any healthy eating plan as they provide both nutritious food options and an opportunity to foster positive relationships among participants. They also help to reduce food waste while teaching valuable life skills such as collaboration, communication and empathy. We look forward to continuing our involvement in projects like these, which bring together people from all walks of life to enjoy and celebrate healthy eating habits!
